“The Effects of Attractive Models in Media on the Self-Esteem of Women” by Abby Sherwood

Abstract

My presentation is about how different forms of media portraying perfect, thin women (the “thin ideal”) in today’s society affect the self-esteems of women. Primarily, my research has come to show that media with unrealistically beautiful women has negative impacts on the self-esteems of women due to self-comparison, and this self-comparison is typically subliminal. However, further research has proven that media portraying realistic, “imperfect” women does not create these kinds of negative emotions in women and can even surface some positive feelings. The significance of this presentation is to show research-based evidence that the “thin ideal” really can be damaging to a woman’s self-esteem. I think it is essential for women to know one of the primary causes for their feelings of low satisfaction towards their own bodies. After all, it’s easier to find a solution to a problem after recognizing what the problem really is.
