Spring 2021 Newsletter
The past year has been filled with heightened emotions ranging from fear to hope, anger to exuberance, isolation to inclusion. Through it all, the students, alumni, faculty and staff of BGSU’s College of Arts and Sciences have persevered. We are pleased to highlight a few individuals who contributed to the public good, despite the challenges of this past year.
Tao Xin, a 1994 BGSU Master of Science in biological sciences graduate, was named the Abbott Researcher of the Year for leading the team that developed the antibodies used in coronavirus rapid tests. “My master’s work set me up for my future career working with antibodies,” Xin said.
The pandemic has severely limited our interactions with others. Students from the School of Media and Communication and the gerontology program created a community engagement project with a long-term care facility in Columbus that is benefitting the older adults as well as the students.
Funded by a grant from Ohio Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, graduate students in Dr. Amílcar Challú’s environmental history seminar class developed "Stories in the Woods," a community-based history told along the hiking trails of Wintergarden/St. John’s Nature Preserve.
Carl Sandifer '05 is the deputy chief of the Space Science Project Office at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. “Collectively, the combination of all of the faculty and the professors, the Multicultural Student Center, and, of course, just the atmosphere at Bowling Green. It was just all the different pieces that helped make me become a successful student and now successful in my career,” Sandifer said.
Sophia Stockham, political science and communication double major, impressed investors and viewers of The Hatch 2021 with her “Hear to Help” product. The less expensive, more durable and ecofriendly repair system for hearing aids will go through the incubation process with help from all five investors of The Hatch. Sophia also won The Eggy people’s choice award.
Lesa Lockford, chair of the Department of Theatre and Film, and cast members of the play, “Tragedy: A Tragedy,” discuss the challenges of directing and performing in a theatre production during a pandemic. Demonstrating how, even during difficult times, the arts prevail.
Several BGSU College of Arts and Sciences faculty members received 2021 Faculty Excellence Awards. We appreciate and applaud the contributions they have made to their respective fields and to the university.
