Fall 2018

Dear Arts and Sciences Alumni and Friends,

Some of the best parts of being Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences include attending commencement and welcoming students to the start of a new academic year. For me that means the past six weeks have been good.

In early August, I shook the hands of nearly 150 Arts and Sciences graduates and congratulated them for achieving that milestone. At the end of August, I greeted many of the 1,000-plus first-year Arts and Sciences students during some of the welcome activities. My primary message: take advantage of the opportunities at BGSU in classrooms, laboratories, organizations and internships because those activities help to develop the whole human being to his or her full potential and prepare them to be successful in their careers and active in civic life. When they do that, in four years I will be happy to shake their hands and give them their diplomas for a job well done.

As always, the new year holds much promise for our students, who are eager to dive deep into the BGSU experience; faculty and staff, who are prepared to share their knowledge and help develop the next generation of critical thinkers and doers; and alumni who stay connected and help our students go far by supporting scholarships, programs, faculty and facilities. The BGSU Family is strong.

Thank you for your continued support.

A story of grace and perseverance
It takes a special person to stick with something for more than 30 years. I had the privilege of meeting a man who did just that—he dedicated himself to reaching a goal and sticking with it for 34 years.

Givens Fellowship

What would you do if you could do anything?
That’s the question the Givens Fellowship challenges students to answer. For more than 10 years the fellowship, named for longtime history faculty member and University historian Dr. Stuart Givens, has facilitated experiences that help students meet, shape and sometimes redefine their goals.
