There are few greater joys as a dean than standing on the platform at commencement and congratulating our graduates as their names are called and they receive their diplomas. At the May 2017 commencement, in addition to congratulating more than 900 of our newest class of Arts and Sciences alumni (undergraduate and graduate degrees), I also had the distinct pleasure of welcoming U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral June Ryan as the commencement speaker for the Arts and Sciences’ ceremony, and watching as our very own Dr. William Easterly ’79 received an Honorary Doctorate of Social Sciences Degree. We are also proud of three-time psychology degree alumnus Anthony Rucci ’72, ’76, ‘78 who presented the commencement address during Friday night’s ceremony.
Just as our graduates look forward to their futures, the College is anticipating the opportunities for students that will result with the recently approved merger of German, Russian and East Asian Languages with Romance and Classical Studies. The merged department World Languages and Cultures will promote linguistic and cultural competence as a bridge to achieve intercultural understandings of global issues and values, an important component as we promote the value of habits of mind in a liberal arts education.
Also looking ahead, Homecoming 2017 will be here before we know it. We would love to see you on campus during Homecoming weekend—Oct. 13-15. There will be many opportunities to visit campus, reminisce about our traditions and celebrate at such events as the College tailgate before the Falcon football game, and an opening ceremony for University and Moseley halls. Details will be posted as they are finalized closer to Homecoming weekend.
Thank you for your interest in the activities of the College of Arts and Sciences and the support you have provided to keep us moving forward.
Raymond Craig, Ph.D.
Dean

Understanding Migration: Timely NEH grant promotes study of local, global perspectives
BGSU was the only Ohio recipient to earn a new Humanities Connection National Endowment for the Humanities first-round grant. The proposal by Drs. Vibha Bhalla, ethnic studies, and Christina Guenther, world languages and cultures, was funded at the full amount to encourage undergraduates to develop the intellectual skills and habits of mind that the humanities cultivate.
