Our students and faculty are back with a passion this week, as the college
office prepares nearly 1,300 cards to recognize Dean's List recipients for
Fall 2016. It was a successful fall for Arts & Sciences. A future Falcon (above)
attended the 12th annual ArtsX, our
exciting exposition of the arts, theatre, film and music in December. The
arts community at large came together again to watch and experience how
BGSU faculty, staff, students and alumni catalyze the creative process.
Visitors became active participants in the arts at BGSU. They were able to
print T-shirts, feel the heat of the
glass-blowing kilns
and purchase
one-of-a-kind
Falcon-made art. The guest artists demonstrated what it means to "seek unknown heights"
(the theme of ArtsX). Though we aren't doing acrobatics and aerialist stunts
every day in the College of Arts and Sciences, we do encourage our students
faculty and staff to reach for the sky in their academic, professional and
personal goals.
For history graduate student Mike Horton, instead of shooting for the moon,
he discovered
history took him below sea level. An avid scuba diver, he struck gold when his interest in history and
scuba diving landed him a place helping research information for "Pirates
& Privateers: The Quest For The Mother Lode," a Discovery Channel show
slated to air this year.
BG Women in Computing, led by Jadwiga Carlson, lauched an initiative
to help girls in grades 5-8 pursue their interests in computer science. Funded
partly by Google Inc. Fund of Tides Foundation and partly by one of our generous Computer Science donors,
the project is providing a model for advancing women in STEM disciplines
and supporting the nascent careers of girls in our communities.
These successes lead to Commencement, reminding us
of our mission at BGSU. The exchange of handshakes and the awarding of diplomas
is a defining moment as graduates prepare to take flight to known (and
unknown) career paths.

Apollos Nwauwa stays connected to African diaspora
At the core of Dr. Apollos Nwauwa is his connection to the African diaspora. Born and raised in Nigeria, Nwauwa has stayed connected to his homeland, Uburuekwe, his Igbo ethnic group and Nigeria in general. He recently was awarded a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship, where he will help develop graduate curriculum for master's and doctoral programs in historical studies at a university in Ghana.
